The project aims to provide residents of the five Local Authority (LA) Wards of Newtown with access to urgent advice appointments through dedicated adviser hours.
To qualify for the service, applicants must live within the boundaries of Newtown, and their advice needs are assessed for urgency before appointments are allocated. The project has limited capacity but has made a significant impact on the local community.
According to the report, this period saw the successful facilitation of welfare benefits for eight clients, resulting in a substantial sum of £54,087.
The Newtown Advice Project's scope extends beyond financial assistance, as it actively addresses a spectrum of issues faced by the community. The project handled a diverse range of challenges, including 92 cases related to benefits, 5 cases involving debt, 3 financial issues, 3 immigration matters, and 2 cases related to travel.
Citizens Advice Powys also provided debt advice to Newtown clients grappling with a total debt burden of £324,107. This included significant amounts owed in council tax (£37,790) and utility bills (£41,828).
The Newtown Advice Project is funded annually by Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council.
