These unique artworks, crafted from scrap gas cylinders and perched on plinths made from discarded oil barrels currently occupy the grounds of the Ironworks Centre, forming an engaging trail for visitors.
One of the Minions, cleverly designed in the shape of a nut, bears a sign on its barrel urging visitors to reject palm oil due to its environmental impact.
Another Minion, equipped with a chainsaw, aims to draw attention to deforestation, emphasizing the need to preserve our forests and protect biodiversity.
Newtown is no stranger to hosting eye-catching artworks created by the British Ironworks Centre. In 2020, the town proudly showcased the impressive Knife Angel, a towering sculpture crafted entirely from confiscated knives and designed to raise awareness about the devastating consequences of knife crime.
Councillor Joy Jones, in her social media post, asked the community for their opinions on welcoming the Minions to Newtown before they embark on their journey to other parts of the country. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with locals expressing their enthusiasm for the idea and anticipating the Minions' arrival.
The potential for Newtown to serve as a temporary home for these environmentally themed Minions presents an opportunity for residents to engage in meaningful conversations about pressing ecological issues. If the proposal is accepted, Newtown will become a unique destination, where art, entertainment, and environmental consciousness converge.
