Town councillors have co-opted Gwyn Cole to fill the vacant seat in the Newtown East Ward, at their meeting last week.

During the selection process, Cllr Cole, who has called Newtown home since 1987, emphasized their deep connection to the town and community. “There is no place like home, and Newtown has been my home since 1987, when I and my parents moved to Newtown from Zimbabwe,” Cllr Cole stated.

He expressed a strong desire to give back to the town and support its development through the council.

Although he acknowledges being new to the role, they highlight their adaptability and eagerness to learn. “I’m a fast learner and excited to contribute if this application for the role is successful,” he shared.

With a diverse career spanning software engineering and filmmaking, Cllr Cole brings a unique skill set. “Filmmaking has given me a great appreciation of people, community, and the amazing things people can achieve!” they added.

Commenting on the appointment, Ed Humphreys, Town Clerk said:

“The Town Council would like to thank everyone who showed interest in the vacancy and encourages residents to continue interest in your Town Council by joining council and committee meetings online."

"Residents are also encouraged to reach out to their local councillors with concerns or suggestions about the town and how it can be improved. "

"The participation, engagement and contribution of the community is crucial for the continued development and well-being of Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn."

"We wish Councillor Gwyn Cole the best of luck in his new post and look forward to his contribution to our community." 

Mr Cole aims to bring a positive mindset and enthusiasm to the council, focusing on making Newtown a “more prosperous and happy town.”
