In a courageous step towards raising awareness about the pervasive issue of domestic abuse, Cathy, a survivor of stalking and psychological abuse, has come forward to share her harrowing experiences.

As part of Dyfed-Powys Police's winter campaign, Cathy's story is a stark reminder of the often-hidden forms of abuse that victims endure.

Cathy's journey began with what seemed like a typical relationship. Her ex-partner appeared to be "the nicest of people" initially. However, as their relationship progressed, she found herself ensnared in a web of control and manipulation. "I was totally manipulated and managed by this man," Cathy revealed. His actions included isolating her from friends, damaging property, and employing gaslighting techniques that left her psychologically scarred.

While Cathy did not experience physical violence, she endured the insidious effects of coercive control. Recognizing the warning signs, she started documenting his behavior in a diary. Shockingly, she discovered that he was stalking her, invading her privacy by watching her at home and showing up uninvited at undisclosed locations.

Cathy's resilience led her to seek support from Dyfed-Powys Police and various organizations dedicated to aiding victims of domestic abuse. "For months and months I had an overnight bag packed so I could just disappear," Cathy shared. "I knew exactly how I could get out of there if I needed to."

Domestic abuse, as highlighted by Cathy's story, extends beyond physical violence and encompasses a spectrum of behaviors, including psychological, emotional, and economic abuse. Cathy wants to dispel the misconception that domestic abuse is only associated with cohabitation or familial ties. "If you've had an intimate relationship with someone – even a one night stand – and they go on to stalk, harass, or control you – that is domestic abuse," she emphasized.

Despite commendable action taken by the police to protect her, Cathy continues to grapple with the enduring effects of psychological abuse on her mental health. "I always consider the consequences of what I do or say," she admitted. "I still always have to be prepared. He is still a threat."

For those who find Cathy's story resonating with their experiences or are in need of support, Dyfed-Powys Police offers various avenues for reporting incidents: online reporting, email (101@dyfed-powys.pnn.police.uk), and the non-emergency number (101). Deaf or speech-impaired individuals can use the text service at 07811 311 908. In emergencies, always call 999.

Additionally, there are organizations such as Live Fear Free, Women's Aid, and the National Stalking Helpline that provide free helplines for those seeking support in contacting the police. Breaking the silence is the first step towards ending the cycle of abuse, and Cathy's bravery serves as an inspiration for others to speak out and seek help.
