Newtown residents, businesses, and service users are being urged to express their opinions and concerns as part of the budget setting process in Powys.

The County Council is facing significant financial challenges for the upcoming financial year and beyond, which will greatly impact the provision of services in the area.

Cllr David Thomas, Cabinet Member for Finance and Corporate Transformation, emphasized the importance of gathering public input during this critical period. He said:

"The Council is facing severe financial pressures for the next financial year and, indeed, for the foreseeable future. These pressures will undoubtedly reshape the way we operate, as the current council structure will not be financially viable going forward. In order to survive, we must adapt. Part of that adaptation includes listening to the people of Powys,"

These financial pressures are not unique to Powys, as local governments across Wales are grappling with the same challenges. The Welsh Local Government Association has highlighted the monumental task ahead, with authorities in Wales facing a staggering £411 million deficit in the next financial year.

An independent financial forecast by Wales Fiscal Analysis has further solidified the grim outlook for public services throughout the country in the coming years.

Cllr Thomas emphasized that the ongoing budget engagement is only the first step in preparing for the future. The Council is dedicated to engaging in full and honest discussions with the people of Powys and service users as they navigate this challenging period.

To ensure that the views and concerns of Newtown residents are taken into account, a survey has been made available online at Budget Survey 2023 | Have Your Say Powys and at local libraries.

The survey provides an opportunity for residents to contribute to the budget setting process by sharing their perspectives and suggestions. 4

The deadline for completing the survey is January 7.
