In a statement to the BBC, Craig Williams acknowledged his mistake, stating, “I clearly made a huge error of judgement that’s for sure and I apologise.”
The allegations have drawn sharp criticism from the Labour party, with a spokesperson describing the situation as "utterly extraordinary."
The unexpected announcement of a July election by Rishi Sunak took many by surprise, including numerous Conservative MPs who were anticipating an autumn date.
Following the controversy, Craig Williams mentioned that further details would not be disclosed as the matter is under investigation by the Gambling Commission.
Lord Cameron, currently Foreign Secretary said the decision as "clearly a very foolish decision."
While Craig Williams remains on the ballot representing the Conservatives in Montgomeryshire & Glyndwr, the outcome of the investigation will determine any potential repercussions.
Lord Cameron emphasized that the Mr Williams will have to face the consequences of his actions as the situation unfolds.
