Police and Crime Commissioners are democratic representatives responsible for overseeing the police. They work with Chief Constables to hold them to account, set budgets, including how much you pay in your Council Tax bill and ensure cash is spent on the right things.

Ultimately, they are meant to be the voice of the public within our police forces. PCCs do not have day-to-day responsibilities of the police and they are not involved in operational decisions.

For the first time in Wales, voters will need to show accepted form of photo ID to vote in the Police and Crime Commissioner elections. As a voter, you will be able to use expired photo ID if you are still recognisable from the photo.

Another change is in the voting system which will see the commissioners elected by the first past the post system for the first time. In all previous elections since 2012 the single transferable vote (STV) system was used which saw people vote for their first and second preferences.

Ceredigion council is the host authority for the 2024 commissioner elections in Dyfed-Powys and will reveal the results in due course.

The elections are supposed to be held every four years, but the last election took place in May 2021 – having been postponed from May 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

All About Newtown, like other broadcasters, is not allowed to report details of campaigning or election issues while polls are open. We are required by electoral law to adopt a code of practice, ensuring fairness between candidates, and that is particularly important on polling day.
