A planning application to convert a property on Commerical Street to three self contained flats has gained the support of town councillors.
The application, submitted on 31st October 2024, by Mr. Toni Paulin aims to convert the property to create three self-contained flats at 2 Commercial Street, Newtown SY16 2BL

According to the planning statement by Hughes Architects, the existing four-storey terraced property with a basement, currently vacant and in need of repair, aims to be transformed into much-needed 1 and 2 bedroom accommodation in Newtown town centre.
The proposal includes external alterations such as repair works to the street facade, installation of new storefrontage, and the addition of a balcony at the rear. Internally, the reconfiguration of spaces will accommodate the development while utilizing the existing structure where possible.
Hughes Architects also noted that the development aligns with the Newtown Place Plan, specifically addressing key vacant/derelict buildings, without detriment to biodiversity, conservation areas, or the historic environment of Newtown.
Town councillors reviewed the application at their meeting on January 6 and expressed their support. However, the final decision will rest with Powys County Council, either at their Planning Committee or delegated to officers.
Residents and stakeholders can view the application online here and provide comments or feedback to the County Council through the same portal.
