The event saw children from several Newtown primary schools gather in the park to witness the historic moment. Present at the event was Vice Lord-Lieutenant Mr Tony Evans, Powys County Council Chair Cllr Beverley Baynham, Deputy Mayor of Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Cllr Mike Childs, Chair of the Services Committee Cllr Val Howard, and Open Newtown CEO Stuart Owen and Cadet Company Sergeant Major (CSM) Elliot Tranter.
The selected Black Poplar, a cutting from Newtown's iconic 350+ year old tree, symbolizes the enduring connection between the town and its natural heritage. The original Black Poplar had survived flood defence works in the 1960s when it was moved from one side of the River Severn to another.
Dolerw Park, known for its green spaces and protected under the Queen Elizabeth II Fields initiative, exemplifies Newtown's commitment to preserving nature for the well-being of the community. The planting of the Black Poplar in the park serves as a lasting tribute to King Charles III's coronation.
Town Clerk, Ed Humphreys said:
“We were privileged to have the Lord-Lieutenant, Mrs Tia Jones, officiate this historic planting and that Newton and Llanllwchaiarn is the chosen site for a tree for Powys. This tree, a living testament to our town’s enduring history, symbolises past and future as the presence of so many children demonstrates. It will be accompanied by a plaque and guard, making it a focal point in Dolerw Park"
Sarah Ruggeri, Headteacher at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, shared her sentiments, stating:
“We felt privileged to be part of such a momentous occasion. Following the tree planting, we took a walk along to St. Mary’s Church to see the newly erected sculpture in honour of our King. All in all, a lovely morning!”
