What is Council Tax and how is it worked out?
Council Tax is paid by households based on the value of their property. The amount you pay is decided by three organisations - Powys County Council, Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council and the Police & Crime Commissioner.
Each organisation sets a budget which is divided by the number of properties in an area. The town council and police portions are called a precept. It is then collected by Powys County Council and paid to the three organisations.

The 5% hike will raise an additional £6.38 million to finance their budget for the upcoming financial year.
The proposals are set to be considered by the Council's Cabinet next Tuesday, however the Cabinet do not set the level of Council Tax - this is a function reserved to the Full Council of 68 councillors.
It is likely that meeting will take place on the 23rd February 2023.
So far we know that Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council has increased it's portion of council tax by 67p a year for a Band D household and the Police & Crime Commissioner will soon be finalising his increase too.
