Montgomeryshire’s MP, Steve Witherden, has disclosed his voting intention on the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill set to be debated in Parliament on 29th November 2024.

The Bill proposes that adults with a terminal illness, expected to pass within six months, could qualify for an assisted death under strict criteria including verification by two doctors and a High Court judge.

Steve Witherden expressed his stance on the matter, saying that he will be voting for the Bill. He said: "It is neither civilised nor humane to prolong the suffering of a sound-minded person in the throes of a slow and painful death."

He highlighted the safeguards within the Bill, focusing on regulations to prevent abuse and protect vulnerable groups. He emphasized the rigorous process that patients would need to undergo, including multiple approvals and self-administration of any medicine.

“I believe in the right of an individual, who finds themselves in such circumstances, to choose the time of their passing and that it is inappropriate for the state to take away their right to choose.”

The MP acknowledged opposing views, especially from individuals with disabilities and specific illnesses, but maintained his belief in the Bill's ability to safeguard all individuals' rights and ensure a well-regulated process.

The proposed legislation has now entered the initial stages of the legislative process after its introduction in Parliament, with further scrutiny and discussions expected to shape its final form as it progresses through the parliamentary system.
