The first option presented is to maintain all existing centres open through an existing contract with Freedom Leisure.
The second option includes closing all centres, except for facilities in specified towns, with potential transfers to schools for required dry side facilities.
The third option proposes transitioning all leisure provision to community or commercial management, encouraging development of local businesses in fitness and leisure industries.
The final option suggests keeping certain centres open while closing others by specific dates unless sustainable business cases are approved.
Cabinet Member for a Safer Powys, Councillor Richard Church, emphasized the importance of public consultation and involvement, stating, “Leisure services are an important part of the council...we must ensure that any future option is affordable, provides equitable access and supports a healthy and active population."
The report and options are set for review by the council’s Joint Scrutiny Committee before being considered by the Cabinet later this month. Public input and feedback will be crucial, with the council aiming to establish a sustainable blueprint for leisure services in Powys.
