New data from Natural Resources Wales has revealed that the River Severn in Newtown during Storm Darragh nearly hit a record high.
As Storm Darragh battered the UK over the last few days, new data from Natural Resources Wales has revealed that the river monitoring station for the River Severn in Newtown hit 3.457m at 4pm on 7th December 2024.

The typical height of the Severn in Newtown is around 1.44m
This new record high was close to the 'highest recorded' entry for river monitoring.
The current record high according to the Natural Resources Wales data was 3.63m which was recorded on the 5th October 2008.
Back then, motorists had to be rescued from cars caught in the floods, including a woman who was stranded in floodwater in the town.
