We caught up with Plaid Cymru candidate, Elwyn Vaughan, who is seeking your votes in the upcoming general election.

Why should voters support you and Plaid Cymru?

I’m delighted to be selected as Plaid Cymru candidate for the new Montgomeryshire & Glyndŵr seat for the next General Election. I have deep roots in the area - born and raised in Montgomeryshire, and have served as a County Councillor on Powys County Council since 2017 - earning a reputation as a hardworking, straight-talking campaigner.

What I've done for our communities already:

  • Air Ambulance: Lead the fight against the reform and closure of Welshpool station
  • Supporting our farmers: Prioritising rural economy and food-growing value
  • Housing: Supporting investment in social housing and greater measures to tackle holiday homes
  • Green future: Presented proposals to Powys Council on sustainability and climate change
  • Campaigning: from restoration of Hodley cemetery to Welshpool playing fields
  • Prioritising Health: Pushing for better ambulance response times and investment in mental health - especially for our our people

This General Election is NOT a two-horse race. Plaid Cymru offers a real alternative that will put the needs of our area first - standing up for fairness, for ambition, and for Wales.

Unlike the London based parties, we care about the millions not the millionaires. Our candidates and those who support us aren’t motivated by personal gain or wealth.

Montgomeryshire is the only seat in Wales that has NEVER elected Labour. Plaid Cymru candidates are an integral part of the local communities and aren’t “dropped in” from England.

Labour have repeatedly broken the promises they made to Wales:

  • Increase taxation on wealthiest 5%
  • Abolish Universal credit in favour of a fairer system
  • Green Investment & no new North Sea oil & gas
  • HS2 funds
  • Devolution of more powers to Wales
  • Crown assets control
  • Abolish the House of Lords

In Elwyn Vaughan, you have a someone rooted in your community. A strong local champion who’ll be Wales’s voice in Westminster – not Westminster’s voice in Wales.

More and more former Labour and Liberal Democrat voters are supporting Plaid Cymru.

In the 2021 Senedd election, Plaid Cymru came second in Maldwyn. In the recent Rhiwcynon by-election, Plaid Cymru were 2nd to the Tories, clearly showing that Plaid Cymru is now the only real challenger to the Tories.

The candidates in the running for your votes in Montgomeryshire & Glyndwr are:

  • Jeremy Brignell-Thorp (Green Party)
  • Oliver Lewis (Reform UK)
  • Glyn Preston (Liberal Democrat)
  • Elwyn Vaughan (Plaid Cymru)
  • Craig Williams (Conservative)
  • Steve Witherden (Labour)
