Get involved in Spring Clean Cymru

Newtown residents and visitors are encouraged to roll up their sleeves as the town prepares for a series of community spring cleaning events as part of the Keep Wales Tidy campaign.

The initiative, spearheaded by Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council in collaboration with Powys County Council and Keep Wales Tidy, aims to promote a cleaner and greener environment for all.

Spring Clean Cymru not only aims to beautify neighborhoods but also raise awareness of the detrimental effects of litter on the environment. It is estimated that litter removal costs Wales millions each year and poses a threat to marine and local wildlife. However, by engaging in simple acts like litter picking, individuals can make an immediate and visible difference in their areas.

Various areas of Newtown will be covered on different dates. The schedule includes:

• Monday, 31 March - Maesydail and Maesyrhandir (11am to 12 noon)
• Tuesday, 1 April - Car parks and town centre (11am to 12 noon)
• Wednesday, 2 April - Vaynor (11am to 12 noon), Trehafren (1.30pm to 2.30pm)
• Thursday, 3 April - Treowen (11am to 12 noon)
• Friday, 4 April - Garthowen (11am to 12 noon)
• Saturday, 5 April - Town Parks and Green Spaces (11am to 2pm)

Individuals, families, community groups, schools, and businesses are urged to participate in the various scheduled clean-up activities.

Cllr Jackie Charlton of Powys County Council expresses the importance of community involvement, stating, "Last year, an incredible 5,000 volunteers took part in more than 700 clean-ups across Wales so this year we are hoping to beat this total and make 2025 the most successful spring clean yet."

For those eager to get involved, you can join organized events across the county or lead your own local clean-up event. Equipment can be borrowed from designated litter picking hubs for those planning their initiatives.
