Her family gathered at her Scottish estate after concerns grew about her health earlier on Thursday.

With her death, her eldest son Charles, the former Prince of Wales, will lead the country in mourning as the new King and head of state for 14 Commonwealth realms.

A statement has just been issued by the Royal Family on behalf of Charles, the new King. He writes:

"The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family.

"We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother.

"I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth and by countless people around the world.

"During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which the Queen was so widely held."

Russell George MS for Montgomeryshire said:

Difficult to do justice in a few words to the late Queen’s contribution.
My deepest sympathy to His Majesty the King and members of our Royal Family.
Her Majesty gave her life to duty and service. Throughout difficult times and crisis she had been constant.

Montgomeryshire MP Craig Williams said he is deeply moved that Her Majesty The Queen has died.

"Our great United Kingdom has lost its most loyal servant and the Royal Family have lost a beloved family member.

"On Montgomeryshire's behalf, thank you for a life of unrivalled leadership."

Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council have said:

Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council wish to express our great sadness following the passing of HM Queen Elizabeth II.

On behalf of the people of Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn, we extend our heartfelt sympathy to The Royal family at this sad time.
