As spring awakens and the days grow longer, the Newtown community is gearing up for an exciting and sustainable event.

Open Energy, in collaboration with Cultivate, is hosting the much-anticipated Spring ShareFest on Saturday, March 8, 2025, from 12 PM to 4 PM at Hafan yr Afon.

  Spring ShareFest

This event starts at 08/03/2025 12:00pm and is being held at Hafan yr Afon. Tickets free. Click here for more information.

This gathering is all about sharing, repairing, and celebrating the season in an environmentally friendly way.

One of the key attractions of ShareFest is the vibrant SwapShop, where attendees can trade seeds, plants, books, and clothes for all ages.

According to a spokesperson from Open Energy, swap shops play a crucial role in fostering a circular economy and reducing waste, stating: “Swap shops provide an excellent way to obtain free second-hand items, boosting the circular economy and reducing waste. They are super fun and unique community events — where else could you trade a plant for a new top or a pair of trousers for a book?”

Seed swaps are particularly valuable at this time of year, empowering local gardeners and growers with access to a diverse range of seeds. This initiative also promotes seed sovereignty, supporting biodiversity and food security against corporate seed monopolies.

For those looking for high-quality seeds, the Wales Seed Hub will have a stall selling seeds—the only paid aspect of the event. Additionally, visitors can explore information stalls and receive free energy advice.

Another highlight of ShareFest is the Repair Café, a collaborative effort with The Textile Junkies, Bluesdigital, and Platform1/The Men’s Shed.

Attendees are encouraged to bring textiles (including soft toys), computers, and gardening tools for free repairs and sharpening.

Need a planter for your upcoming gardening projects? Free planters made from reclaimed wood will be available for those looking to get creative with their green spaces.

This family-friendly event also features an array of engaging activities for children.

Kids can take part in wildflower seed bomb making, nature-inspired sustainable crafts, and even a circular sewing school led by The Textile Junkies. Using textile and block printing techniques, children can transform old garments into unique artistic pieces.

Even if you have nothing to swap or repair, there’s still a way to participate. Attendees can join Keep Wales Tidy for a community litter pick and earn swap shop tokens in return.

For those looking to contribute items to the SwapShop in advance, drop-offs can be made at Hafan yr Afon on Wednesday, March 5, from 9 AM to 4 PM, and on Friday, March 7, from 9 AM to 4 PM.

If you have any questions or need more information, feel free to contact Open Energy at openenergy@opennewtown.org.uk.
