In an important announcement, Wales' First Minister Mark Drakeford has confirmed that he will be leaving the Senedd at the next election.

Previously stating his intention to step down as First Minister before the conclusion of the Senedd term in 2026, a fixed date for the selection of his successor is yet to be determined.

Speaking during the National Eisteddfod in Boduan, North Wales, Mr Drakeford emphasized the significance of a fresh start.

He highlighted the challenges faced by future leaders in the Welsh Parliament and expressed his desire not to impede their progress, stating, "It's important to have a refresh. I think it is difficult for those who will be doing the work in the future to have people like me sitting behind them."

Drawing inspiration from Tony Benn, who left the House of Commons to focus more on politics, he further explained his decision.

During a question and answer session with Elin Jones, the presiding officer of the Senedd, Mr Drakeford reiterated that he will no longer be a Member of the Senedd after 2026. However, he made it clear that he will continue to actively participate in debates and remain committed to shaping Wales' future.

First elected as the Member for Cardiff West in 2011, Mr Drakeford assumed various ministerial roles under the leadership of Carwyn Jones starting from 2013. He eventually succeeded Jones as the First Minister and Welsh Labour leader in 2018.

Throughout the Covid pandemic, Mr Drakeford's televised appearances played a crucial role in informing the public about the specific public health measures implemented in Wales.

Widely acknowledged for expanding public awareness of the Welsh Parliament and Government, he became a familiar face during these challenging times.

In December, Mr Drakeford had initially announced his intention to conclude his premiership prior to the next Senedd elections.
