Police investigating graveyard road

Dyfed Powys Police has launched an investigation into a disturbing incident involving a road construction project that encroached upon a graveyard near Kerry.

The controversial development, which resulted in parts of the graveyard at the former Hodley Chapel being flattened by a road, has also drawn the attention of a Member of the Senedd.

The ongoing investigation is focused on unraveling the circumstances surrounding the construction of the road over the sacred burial site, with Dyfed Powys Police classifying the incident as a case of "criminal damage."

MyNewtown initially reported on the incident last week, which left grieving relatives of those interred in the graveyard in a state of profound shock.

Powys County Council, in response, indicated that it was scrutinising whether proper planning consent procedures had been violated. Additionally, the Home Office has been alerted to the situation as part of a broader investigation.

Plaid Cymru MS, Cefin Campbell, a Regional Senedd Member, wasted no time in personally visiting the site and meeting with residents and families affected by the construction at Hodley. Joined by Councillor Elwyn Vaughan, he was deeply moved by the distress and sorrow he witnessed among the affected community.

Expressing his determination to address the issue, Campbell pledged to hold Powys County Council accountable and to voice his concerns to Welsh Government ministers.

He said:

"Whatever the facts regarding planning permission, it is morally distressing and disrespectful and all effort should be made to correct matters and show the appropriate respect to the families of the deceased"
