A man from Newtown has been given a suspended sentence after being found guilty of rape between August 2016 and February 2017.

Ozhan Ongun, who is now 20, was found guilty at Mold Crown Court this week, but due to his young age at the time of the offences he was given a two-year suspended sentence. He was found guilty of raping the victim when he was 12 years old.

As reported by the Powys County Times, the judge, Niclas Parry praised the victim for her bravery and strength of character. The abuse came to light when another boy, who had been asked sexual questions about the victim by Ongun, flagged the situation.

Alongside his two year suspended sentence, Ozhan Ongun will also be included in the Horizon programme for sex offenders, rehabilitation activities, and unpaid work. He was also issued with an indefinite restraining order to prevent him from contacting his victim or being around any underage girls for the next 10 years.

The victim will remain anonymous for life.
