The county council has announced that card recycling banks will soon be removed from the community recycling sites across the county, impacting residents in Newtown and surrounding areas.

When community recycling sites were first introduced, there were no kerbside recycling collections available. The main purpose of these sites was to provide residents with a convenient location to recycle household items close to home. However, as the weekly kerbside recycling service has become well established, it is now easier for residents to recycle card and other items from the comfort of their own homes.

Cllr Jackie Charlton, Cabinet Member for a Greener Powys said:

"The decision to remove card recycling banks was agreed by the cabinet earlier this year,"

"Apart from the initial budget saving aspect, it was identified as a duplication of service."

"The removal will allow us to focus our resources on fulfilling the weekly kerbside collections efficiently."

Expressing understanding for regular users of the card recycling banks, Cllr Charlton further advised, "If broken up and added to your blue recycling box, card can easily be recycled each week from home. Residents facing challenges to accommodate all their recycling into the kerbside containers can request additional boxes online. Larger quantities of card can still be taken to any of the five Household Waste Recycling Centres across Powys."

In addition to streamlining resources, the removal of these banks aims to prevent abuse from fly-tippers contaminating the materials with non-recyclable waste or illegal use by businesses.
