The Democracy and Boundary Commission Cymru has today announced its Revised Proposals for Wales’ new Senedd constituencies, which will come into effect for the 2026 Senedd elections.

Among the changes is the creation of the Gwynedd Maldwyn constituency, which will encompass Newtown and other parts of mid and north-west Wales.

The restructuring reduces Wales’ constituencies from 40 to 16, each electing six Members of the Senedd (MSs) using the D’Hondt method, as part of the reforms introduced by the Senedd Cymru (Members and Elections) Act. These changes aim to streamline representation while preserving local ties and practical travel boundaries.

The Gwynedd Maldwyn constituency pairs parts of the existing constituencies of Montgomeryshire and Dwyfor Meirionnydd. Stretching across mid Wales, it will serve as a critical link between rural communities, balancing the diverse needs of areas such as Newtown, Machynlleth, and Bala.

The Commission highlighted the importance of maintaining contiguity and local connections in its proposals. Gwynedd Maldwyn reflects shared histories, economic ties, and the strong presence of the Welsh language in many parts of the region.

The proposals have been shaped by extensive public engagement, with over 3,700 responses received during the Initial Consultation Period. While some responses expressed broad opinions on the process, many provided valuable suggestions for refining boundaries and names.

Chief Executive Shereen Williams MBE OStJ emphasized the importance of public feedback in this next stage:

“These Revised Proposals represent a significant step on the journey to creating Wales’s new constituencies. We urge everyone to share their views before 13 January 2025.”

The public can provide input on whether Gwynedd Maldwyn feels like a natural pairing for their communities or propose alternatives. The Commission has underscored that it will remain open to adjustments within the rules of the review process.

    What’s Next?

The final round of public consultation will run until 13 January 2025. After considering this feedback, the Commission will publish its Final Decisions Report in March 2025. These decisions will shape the electoral landscape for the 2026 Senedd election and beyond.
