The results from a recent survey conducted by Montgomeryshire Senedd Member Russell George have shed light on the strong public support for lowering car parking charges in Powys County Council-run car parks.

The survey aimed to understand the community's views on current parking fees and their potential impact on local businesses and town centers.

The survey revealed that over 90% of respondents believed that reducing parking fees in Council-run car parks would incentivize people to shop in town centers and support local businesses. Only 2% of participants felt that lower charges would have a negligible effect on trade, indicating a clear desire to make parking more affordable and contribute to high street rejuvenation.

According to the survey findings, the majority of participants favored either free parking for one hour or a reduced charge of £1 for the initial hour, with some suggesting alternative options like a 30-minute parking choice.

Mr. George highlighted that the current minimum charge for parking in most Powys County Council-run car parks stands at £2.50 for up to two hours, and the previous option to pay a lower fee for one-hour stays in extended parking lots was eliminated in April 2023. Concerns were raised about the effect of these charges on town center footfall and local business sustainability.

Mr. George welcomed the Council’s reconsideration of the survey results and urged swift action to support local high street businesses.

Newtown County Councillor Pete Lewington echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for fair and affordable parking options to ensure the thriving of local businesses.

Cllr Lewington also raised concerns regarding potential disparities in parking charges for different types of vehicles and highlighted the necessity of fair treatment for all road users to maintain a balance in parking tariffs.
