Shop to close after nearly a century

One of Newtown's most historic establishments, the branch of WH Smiths located on High Street, is to to cease operations in the New Year.

Having been an integral part of the high street for nearly a hundred years, the impending closure has sent ripples through the local community.

Staff members at the Newtown branch were informed of the closure news on Friday, November 29.

Since its inception in 1927, WH Smiths has been a cornerstone of Newtown's High Street, with a unique charm that has captivated residents and visitors alike.

Open Newtown expressed profound disappointment at the closure, reaching out to the WH Smith CEO and Chair in a bid to urge them to reconsider their decision.

They highlighted the significance of the establishment, stating, "This heritage property is a living museum, restored in the 1970s to reflect how it looked when it first opened in 1927. It is unique."

Russell George MS voiced his disapproval of the closure, emphasizing the cultural and historical value of the WH Smith branch in Newtown. He said:

"It’s been located in the town for nearly 100 years. Clearly it’s a business decision, but it’s not just a shop, the building also houses a museum, and the character of the shop is part of the identity of the town."

The branch of WH Smiths underwent a restoration in the 1970s that unveiled original tiles, mirrors, and decorations. The oak shelving was meticulously refurbished, and special attention was given to recreating a 1920s ambiance with bespoke fittings and fixtures.

In a nod to the brand's rich history, a museum was established on the building's first floor, offering insights into WH Smith's evolution from its inception in London in 1792 to its present-day operations.

The museum exhibits delve into the intricacies of news distribution, the legacy of Smith's railway bookstalls, and the evolution of retail practices over the years.

Efforts are underway to explore avenues to possibly retain the historic WH Smith branch. Local representatives, including Cllr Joy Jones, Town Mayor Pete Lewington, and Russell George MS, are actively seeking a meeting with WH Smith executives to explore potential solutions to keep this beloved shop operational.
