The new affordable homes will be built on the site of the former Robert Owen House in Newtown, and will be owned and managed by the council, with allocation to applicants on the Powys Common Housing Register.

The council's Affordable Housing Team is currently seeking a principal contractor to build energy-efficient homes that will help address the housing crisis in the county.

Cllr Matthew Dorrance, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for a Fairer Powys, stated that the new homes are part of an ambitious plan to build over 310 new council homes, worth nearly £79m.

Cllr Dorrance emphasized that the new housing development is crucial for the council to tackle the housing emergency in the region. He further added that the council has prioritized the construction of high-quality council housing, and the new development in Newtown is a significant part of their plans.

"This is an exciting development that will meet the needs of the local community, and the successful contractor will be helping us meet one of our important priorities," Cllr Dorrance said.

Powys County Council's efforts to build affordable housing is a step in the right direction, as the demand for affordable homes continues to grow. The council's investment in the construction of new council homes will not only help tackle the housing emergency but also create job opportunities for the local community.

The tender package for the new housing development in Newtown is now available for interested contractors to apply. The council is committed to working with the successful bidder to deliver high-quality and energy-efficient homes that will meet the needs of the community.
