Newtown Town Clock, a historic timepiece and beloved local landmark, has been temporarily silenced due to a recent glitch causing it to chime twice per hour.
In a statement, Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council, who are responsible for maintaining and managing the clock said that the clock will remain quiet until early June when engineers are expected to resolve the issue.

This iconic timepiece, originally built to keep the town's workers punctual, has over time become an integral symbol of Newtown. The clock is nestled within the Clock Tower, a structure designed by Wood & Kendrick of Birmingham and erected in honour of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1900.
The clock itself was a generous gift to the people of Newtown during the same year. It was funded by Sarah Brisco, a descendent of the Pryce family and owner of Newtown Hall.
Although the temporary quiet might be seen as an inconvenience, reassurances have been made from the Council that skilled engineers are set to restore the clock to its usual functionality.
