At the Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Council meeting on 27th June 2022, Town councillors discussed and resolved a motion brought forward by Cllr Richard White which asks Powys County Council to re-opened to it's pre-pandemic service levels.

In its letter to Powys County Council, the Town Council explained that during the debate of the motion, councillors discussed the move out of the Covid-19 era and the continuing presence of the Covid-19 vaccination team at the Park Street Centre in Newtown, which means it remains closed to the pre-Covid day centre service. It was clear in debate that Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council felt most strongly that the Park Street Day Centre, was, and is, a relevant and important facility for the community.

In accompanying briefing note from County Councillor Sian Cox, Portfolio Holder for a Caring Powys, Powys County County explained:

“Any re-opening of day centres relies on a sufficiency of staffing for re-openings to be viable and sage. We are currently experimenting with phased re-opening of day centres between now and the end of July, but we need to do this with reference to premises’ risk assessments and staffing availability.

With regards to the Park Day Centre in particular, I’m told that this centre is being used by Powys Teaching Health Board for vaccination clinics until 20th June; and that, owing to, the building having been used for a variety of purposes since its closure in March 2020, it may require refurbishment or internal works before it can be re-established as a day centre service”.
