Town councillors are to contact the county council and ask for action over concerns of an English-only housing development name.

The development, situated on the former Travis Perkins site on New Road, was agreed to be named Plas Melinydd, a Welsh name, instead of the English name Millers Place by the County Council, who are the street naming authority.

According to MyNewtown, it has come to the attention of the councillors that a sign at the construction site refers to it as Millers Place, leading to confusion and disappointment among local residents.

The social housing development is being built for Barcud, the region's housing association. The development will consist of 32 x 1 and 2 bedroom flats and 8 x 1 bedroom flats.

Back in January this year we reported that Cllr Jackie Molloy-Davies urged councillors to adopt an English name for the development, due to concerns that Welsh only place names could present problems for refugees coming to live in Powys.

On Monday evening, town councillors agreed to take action and contact the Powys County Council planning enforcement team in order to have the sign changed.
