Residents in Newtown will see an increase in the cost of their green bin collections this year, with council chiefs deciding to raise the fee by an eye-popping 20%.

The annual charge for the 20 fortnightly collections will be £60, up from £50 last year, and double the initial cost of £30 six years ago.

The rise comes at a challenging time for many, with Powys County Council's portion of council tax set to increase by 8.6% if approved later this month.

While the increased fee is contingent on approval by the Full Council in the coming weeks, the council is moving forward with the collection service set to start in March. Should the raise not be approved, subscribers will receive refunds for the difference in fees.

Households can expect their bills to arrive this month, alerting them to the adjusted cost for green waste disposal. Despite the rise in fees, the Council reassures residents that the service remains a valuable asset in waste management and environmental preservation.
