In an inspiring display of determination and community spirit, ten local men from Newtown have successfully raised over £1000 towards plans for a Community Health and Wellbeing Centre.

The funds were raised during an arduous 72-hole golf marathon that kicked off at 5am on Saturday morning.

The group, consisting of members from Newtown’s 1st Team, club members, and friends from Newtown Rugby Club, took on the challenge in two teams. They were expected to walk approximately 23 miles during the challenge.

The golfers received essential support along the way, including a well-deserved lunch break organized by the generous folks at St Giles Golf Club and catered by The Abermule Inn. This break provided the much-needed energy boost for the lads to continue their marathon.

The proposed new Community Health and Wellbeing Centre plans are being pushed forward by Drenewydd Actif Newtown. According to their website, there is a need to address the outdated 1970s changing facilities which are currently used by the sporting teams at the Recreation Ground in Newtown.

A spokesperson said: “This building aims to be the heart of the Newtown community where sport, health, and wellbeing come together. Our mission is to create an inclusive and empowering space that supports the physical and mental health and wellbeing of our community".

The organizers have expressed their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who participated, supported, and donated.

However, the fundraising efforts are far from over. The community is encouraged to continue supporting this noble cause by donating via their JustGiving page here.
