The Health Board will adjust the opening hours of several Minor Injury Units (MIUs) due to staffing shortages and low overnight attendance. While Brecon and Llandrindod Wells will see their hours reduced to 8 AM - 8 PM daily, the hours for Welshpool and Ystradgynlais MIUs will remain unchanged. These alterations are intended to provide more reliable service during peak times and ensure efficient use of resources.
New Role for Newtown’s Community Hospital
More significantly for Newtown residents, the local community hospital will take on an expanded role. As part of a county-wide reorganization, Newtown, along with Brecon, will become a specialized center for inpatient rehabilitation. This initiative builds on their current function as stroke rehabilitation centers and aims to offer specialized care for patients needing intensive rehabilitation before returning home.
A comprehensive engagement period is planned from July 29 to August 25, allowing patients, staff, and the public to provide feedback and understand the implications of these changes. The Health Board has emphasized the importance of public input during this period to ensure these adjustments meet community needs effectively.
The Health Board’s decision comes amid broader challenges faced by the NHS, including high waiting times post-pandemic, financial pressures due to inflation, an aging population with complex health conditions, and staffing shortages. By reallocating resources and optimizing service delivery, these temporary changes aim to address these pressing issues.
Residents are encouraged to visit the Health Board’s website at https://pthb.nhs.wales for detailed information, including a survey for feedback, webinar sessions for Q&A, and additional resources.
These temporary changes will be in effect for six months, with the goal of maintaining high-quality care for the community within available resources.
