Newtown residents and visitors have contributed to the significant increase in rail usage for Transport for Wales (TfW), with the company recording the largest rise in passenger numbers among all UK train operators this spring.
Between April and June this year, 7.6 million journeys were made on TfW services, up 27% from the same period the previous year.

Chief Executive Officer James Price attributed this growth to various factors, stating, "We're doing what it takes to make the Welsh transport network the best it can be, and it's encouraging to see more and more people using it for their everyday lives." The introduction of 26 brand-new trains in April 2023, which increased to 57 by April 2024, has played a crucial role in enhancing the travel experience for passengers.
Additional services on various lines, improved punctuality and reliability, the extension of Pay As You Go options, and the introduction of cheaper fares have also contributed to the upsurge in rail usage.
Mr Price highlighted the positive impact on different communities, stating, "That's down to the hard work of so many people to deliver a consistent and reliable service."
Major events in Cardiff, including concerts by renowned artists like Bruce Springsteen, Pink, Foo Fighters, and Taylor Swift, have driven rail usage.
This surge in passenger numbers aligns with TfW's commitment to upgrading its services, as evidenced by their achievements in performance and customer satisfaction.
The company was the most improved operator in terms of reliability and cancellations, with a Passenger Satisfaction rate of 88%, the highest since the survey began.
