Newtown residents and visitors are urged to be mindful of what goes down their drains and toilets as Hafren Dyfrdwy supports the annual Unblocktober campaign, aimed at raising awareness about preventing blockages.

The water company, which serves northern Powys among other areas, emphasises the importance of being a responsible user of the sewage system to avoid unnecessary blockages.

Grant Mitchell, Blockages Lead for Hafren Dyfrdwy, said:

“Our work preventing and clearing blockages is something we talk about all year round, but Unblocktober is the perfect time to reinforce the messages to our customers.

“Only the three P’s, that’s pee, poo and (toilet) paper, should be flushed down the toilet and everyone should avoid putting fats, oils and greases down the sink. Just making sure you follow these steps can avoid awful blockages in your home.”

Unblocktober, organized by The Lanes Group, is a nationwide effort to educate the public on the impact of improper waste disposal on drains and the environment.

A spokesperson from The Lanes Group highlighted the detrimental effects of harmful substances being disposed of in drains, such as the creation of fatbergs that clog sewers and harm ecosystems.

Encouraging community involvement, the spokesperson added, "Let’s take the pledge together and save our sewers and seas." The campaign aims to engage individuals in protecting the environment and reducing pollution in waterways.

Residents seeking advice on avoiding blockages can visit Hafren Dyfrdwy's blockages advice page. For more information on the Unblocktober campaign, visit www.unblocktober.org.
