The town council is inviting residents to consider becoming a town councillor to make a positive impact on the town and its residents.

Town Councillors play a crucial role in improving the quality of life for local people and addressing important community issues. They come from diverse backgrounds and experiences, aiming to represent and serve the community effectively.

    Whilst not paid for their work, town councillors are entitled to a basic allowance each year to support them in their role, plus an attendance allowance of £30 per meeting attended.

    Currently, Newtown's West Ward has one vacant position on the town council, offering residents a unique opportunity to actively participate in local governance.

    By becoming a town councillor, you can contribute to the delivery of local services, shape the local environment, influence policies, and help make important community decisions that impact residents and visitors alike.

    Town Clerk Ed Humphreys is encouraging interested individuals to consider applying for co-option to the town council. He emphasized the importance of diversity among council members, stating “If you have ideas to help make this community a better place to live, learn, work, or visit, and feel able to persuade others of their benefit over their cost, this is your opportunity. Being a town councillor is one of the ways to work with others try to put your ideas into practice for the benefit of the community as a whole."

    The town council values candidates from various age groups, genders, ethnicities, abilities, experiences, and backgrounds. Mr Humphreys encourages individuals from all walks of life to step forward, noting that there is a dedicated team ready to support new councillors.
