Today marks one year since the roof of Bethel Chapel collapsed - but has anything changed in our attitudes to old buildings Newtown?

On 27th September 2021, the roof to Bethel Chapel collapsed, causing the building to be demolished shortly after due to health and safety concerns.

In the aftermath of the incident, residents have expressed their concerns about preserving Newtown's heritage. Since then the town has seen planning applications to demolish Croesawdy and to build new modern highrise flats in Newtown's conservation area.

Concerns from residents also include protection of St David's Church, a prominent landmark in Newtown which has seen vandlism and criminal damage.

Has anything changed in the eyes of the authorities since the collapse of Bethel Chapel? How is Newtown going to continue to preserve it's heritage? Let us know in the comments.
