Residents and visitors of Newtown are eagerly anticipating the completion of the long-awaited bridge that will provide the town with a fourth river crossing.
The new cycle and pedestrian bridge, spanning the River Severn between Poundstretcher and Canal Road, was lifted into place last June.

However, progress on the bridge had been stalled as contractors awaited the arrival of critical components for the safety barrier on each side of the bridge, which had to be manufactured, tested, and shipped from Switzerland. Powys County Council has now confirmed that the awaited parts are on-site, and work is set to commence shortly.
A spokesperson for the council highlighted, "Once this last crucial part of the construction process has been completed, an opening date for the much-anticipated cycle and pedestrian bridge will be confirmed for later in the Spring."
Since the installation of the Newtown Active Travel Bridge structure over the River Severn last year, construction efforts have been focused on completing the bridge deck, connecting paths, and surrounding landscaping, including an outside gym area.
The cycle and foot bridge, which has been a point of interest for residents, was installed on Saturday, June 29. With the final safety measures now being put in place, the bridge is nearing its official unveiling within the community.
The completion of this project signifies a significant milestone for Newtown, providing enhanced accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists. Stay tuned for the confirmed opening date of this exciting addition to Newtown's infrastructure in the coming months.
