The scheme was granted planning permission back in March 2022.
According to the scheme, the site chosen for the footbridge is strategically positioned to provide easy access for residents and visitors alike. One end of the bridge will be located northwest of the cemetery on the eastern side of the river, while the other end will be situated southeast of Cymric Mill on the western side.
The design of the proposed footbridge showcases a functional yet visually appealing structure that will become a notable landmark in the area. With a length of approximately 61 meters, the bridge will feature steel arches rising approximately 9 meters above the bridge deck at its highest point. The deck itself will be 3.5 meters wide, with a sturdy 1.4-meter-high balustrade for safety. This elevated vantage point will provide pedestrians and cyclists with captivating views of the river and the surrounding landscape.
The local community is invited to attend a public drop-in session on Tuesday 13 June, between 3pm – 7pm, at Newtown Market Hall, to find out more about the new bridge, the construction process, and what will be happening locally while it is being built.
Construction firm, JN Bentley will be responsible for building the new bridge on behalf of Powys County Council, and local communities on both sides of the river should expect to see them onsite from 19 June 2023 until the end of the year.
Cllr Jackie Charlton, Cabinet Member for a Greener Powys said:
“This bridge will make such a difference to those living in the local area and will certainly provide them with the opportunity to make short journeys such as to work, school or the local shops, by bike or on foot, rather than having to get in the car.”
“The active travel routes across the county are improving and increasing year on year and we are excited that this new bridge, one of our most ambitious active travel projects, is finally coming to fruition after years of planning.
“We are looking forward to meeting the local community during our drop-in session on 13 June, where we can share plans of what will be happening on site and in the local area over the coming months. Everyone is welcome to attend.”
