Cadw, the Welsh Government Historical Environment Service have began a statutory consultation to place Croesawdy on the listed building register.

This consultation has now begun on the possibility of Croesawdy, in New Road, Newtown being placed on the listed building register. The Historic Environment (Wales) Act 2016 requires the Welsh Ministers to consult with partners before a property can be listed. 

The property, given the reference number 87885 has been proposed for Grade II listed status and now enjoys 'interim protection'. This means that no work can take place on the building, including demolition, until the Welsh Ministers reach a decision on the designation.

One of the organisers of the Save Croesawdy Group, Gill Bridgwater said:

“Speaking on behalf of the residents of New Road who started this campaign to save Croesawdy, it has been very long stressful three-and-a-half weeks for everyone and the nearly 600 members of the Save Croesawdy Facebook Group.

“This breaking news is immensely encouraging – that Cadw have deemed Croesawdy worthy of going to the next stage of the Spot Listing propose, the consultation stage.”

Included for its special architectural interest as a well preserved example of a late C19 industrialist’s house displaying good use of design and materials, reflecting contemporary and regional architectural styles, and designed by the major architectural practice of the period in Newtown. It has special historic interest as a visible and prominent part of the late C19 development of the mid-Wales textile industry, a building that through its architectural character reflects the relative prosperity of the period.

This structure has been afforded Interim Protection under the Planning (Listed Building and Conservation Areas) Act 1990. It is an offence to damage this structure and you may be prosecuted.

The consultation will take place between 24 August 2022 till the 21 September 2022.
