A total of 15 people have been taken to the hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing, according to the British Transport Police. All other passengers have been evacuated from both trains involved in the collision.
The two services affected were the 18:31 from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth and the 19:09 from Machynlleth to Shrewsbury. Following the collision, emergency services were deployed to the scene, with the A470 road closed in both directions between Caersws and Glantwymyn.
Transport for Wales stated that rail replacement services were operational to ensure minimal disruption to commuters following the incident. The response involved cooperation from ambulance and fire services, local police, the coastguard, and support from the rail industry.
A spokesperson for Dyfed Powys Police said:
"British Transport Police, Welsh Ambulance Service, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, HM Coastguard and agencies from the rail industry were also in attendance."
"Sadly, we can confirm a man has died following the collision. His next of kin have been informed and his family are being supported by specialist officers."
Welsh First Minister Eluned Morgan expressed her condolences, stating,
"My thoughts are with all those involved in the rail incident in Powys earlier this evening. I would like to thank the emergency services for their rapid response and have requested to be kept updated on any further developments throughout the night."
The line is likely to be closed for some time.
