Ahead of the debate by County Councillors on Thursday over the Powys County Council draft budget, leader of the Welsh Conservative Group has hit out at the ruling coalition over 'broken services and broken promises'.

In a press release, the leader of the Welsh Conservative Group, Cllr Aled Davies said:

"Under the Liberal Democrats and Labour, residents of Powys are facing a potential Council Tax increase that is nearly double the current rate of inflation. The Council will raise over a £100 million in Council Tax for the first time with an additional £77 million raised through charges."

"This decision has sparked significant concern among opposition leaders and Councillors, who argue that it unfairly burdens those least able to afford it without offering any relief on the new fees."

"This steep rise in Council Tax is sadly matched by an equally steep decline in the quality of services the Council now provide, a clear result of the Liberal Democrats skewed priorities. Our residents are confronted with a crisis across the board, from deteriorating roads to an education system under threat."

Newtown West county councillor, Cllr Pete Lewington echoed the sentiment of ignored public opinion, remarking, "Ignoring the voices of our residents for the second consecutive year, the Council's proposed tax increase overlooks the clear message from our community that they cannot afford these hikes."

He continued to say:

"The Welsh Conservative group conclude in light of the widespread concern and opposition to the budget proposals; Powys and its residents deserve a Council that listens and responds to their needs, rather than imposing unsustainable financial burdens. It's time for a budget that reflects the priorities and welfare of our community,"
