We moved to Newtown at Christmas 1987.

Since then, I have seen positive changes, such as the improvements to the green spaces, the bye-pass, investments by international companies in local factories, the redevelopment of Broad street, Union St community garden, the new bridges and new events like the food festival, celebration of Newtown, the outdoor festival, canal triathlon, 10K run etc.

On the negative side, the Town Centre shopping has declined along with the market, leaving too many empty buildings on the high street.

I have been on the Town Council for 7 years, the last two as Deputy Mayor. One of the key things that you learn on the Council is that Newtown would not work without volunteers. This may be something high profile like the return of the Newtown Carnival or the person who quietly picks up litter without asking.

The known amount of voluntary work is staggering and there is lots that we don’t know about.

The Town Councilors are part of this army of volunteers.  They are doing their part in improving the life of our residents.

The other lesson you learn is that you can only get things done by working with others. All the positive changes have been done in partnership with other groups.  Getting and distributing funding is one of the key things that the council does.

As the new Mayor, I hope to continue the work of the Town Council, building on the lessons that we have learnt.
