Plans to convert the former Newtown United Reformed Church and adjoining schoolroom into two dwellings and two tourism units have been approved by Powys County Council.

The decision was made on December 20, 2024 following 323 days of consideration by the planning authority.

The proposal, submitted by Mr. and Mrs. P. Davies of Caersws, aims to breathe new life into the historic site on the corner of New Church Street and Park Lane.

The church, which has been closed since 2016, will be transformed into holiday accommodation and residential homes while preserving its iconic character.

The Grade II listed building, constructed around 1880 in the decorated Gothic style, occupies approximately 900m².

The main body of the church will be converted into two holiday units.

Meanwhile, the adjoining schoolroom will be repurposed into two residential dwellings.

The plans include minimal exterior alterations, maintaining the building’s historic integrity. Dormer windows will be added to the church roof, and conservation rooflights will be installed on the schoolroom.

These changes were refined following input from the council's Built Heritage Officer.

A heritage impact assessment accompanying the application noted the site's significance and proposed measures to respect its history.

This includes archaeological monitoring during work on the chapel floor, as it is believed the remains of a former minister may have been reburied beneath it during construction.

Newtown & Llanllwchariarn Town Council expressed its support for the development during the statutory consultation period.

This project is expected to enhance the town’s appeal to visitors while providing new housing opportunities, balancing heritage conservation with modern use.
