A Newtown man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted sexual communication with a child, following an online 'sting' by a vigilante group.

The arrest which took place on the 20th July 2024 was carried out in the Maesyrhandir area of the town.

In a statement to All About Newtown, Dyfed Powys Police confirmed the arrest of a 49 year old male. They said:
"A 49-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of Attempt Sexual Communication with a Child and Arranging or Facilitating Commission of a Child Sex Offence."
"He has been released on conditional bail pending further police enquiries."
The use of online sting operations by civilian groups has become a controversial yet method of identifying potential offenders. While these actions can sometimes expedite the identification of suspects, they also raise questions about legality, safety, and the proper channels for addressing suspected criminal behavior.
