Waste management in Newtown’s green spaces is set to take centre stage at the upcoming Services Committee meeting tonight as councillors review Open Newtown’s latest land management report.
The report reveals a series of ongoing efforts to improve waste disposal facilities, including the installation of new bins and the relocation of existing ones to better serve park users.

Open Newtown, which manages 130 acres of green space under a long-term lease, reported that several new bins have already been installed, with some older, deteriorating units replaced.
However, certain areas still face problems with overflowing bins and litter accumulation.
To address this, Open Newtown plans to move some bins closer to frequently used pathways, which they believe will encourage better waste disposal by visitors.
A more pressing issue highlighted in the report is the “significant fly-tipping of dog waste bags” at sites where bins were removed by Powys County Council prior to Open Newtown taking over management.
To tackle this, a bin will be reinstalled in Trehafren Fields, with monitoring planned to assess whether the new bin reduces the fly-tipping problem.
Additionally, a new dedicated dog waste bin has been purchased and will be installed soon.
