Headteacher, Rob Edwards said:

“We are incredibly pleased to see the hard work and efforts of our students being rewarded," he said.

"This is particularly pertinent after what has been a challenging academic year for all. There has been a continued upward trend in all Key Performance Measures since 2019, the last time students sat external exams”.

"We are today celebrating another set of strong GCSE results and this can only be attributed to the resilience, tenacity, cheerfulness and high spirits of a special group of students.

"The results achieved by students today and the strong A level results last week finish off a successful year for the school, in the most difficult of circumstances.

"As ever, I want to thank the staff, parents and the wider school community who have supported us throughout this year.”

Chair of Governors, Jo Banks said

“The students receiving results this week have shown great resilience and the hard work that has gone into achieving their results must be recognised and celebrated. Newtown High School’s results show clear and strong improvement over those returned the last time students sat formal examinations.

"More students are achieving at all levels and this gives us confidence for the future. As a school we remain committed to our ongoing journey of improvement, helping all our pupils achieve their potential.”

The school said its Sixth Form applications are still open. For more details about all the courses that are on offer, visit www.powys6.cymru

Across Powys the results are similar with many students getting top grades.

In a statement, Powys County Council said they were 'very pleased' to hear of the many learners who have achieved the results that they needed to take the next step on their career path be it in education, training or an apprenticeship.

Cllr Pete Roberts, Cabinet Member for a Learning Powys, said:

“We send our warmest congratulations to our pupils who have received their GCSE and Level 2 qualification results today.

“We recognise the challenges faced by both learners and schools, including the transition back to examinations for the first time in three years. Which means we’re extremely proud of the achievements of all our learners and are delighted to hear the stories of their success.

“We want to thank everyone at schools who have supported their learners through their exams and alsothank the families who have played a vital role in supporting and encouraging their children throughout their education.

“Looking forward, we would encourage all learners to seek advice and guidance on the wide range of post-16 learning opportunities available to them including the Chweched Powys Sixth form options.

“We wish all our learners the very best in their chosen next steps.”
