Powys county councillors are poised to receive a substantial 5.92% boost in their basic allowance, according to the independent body which sets councillors pay across Wales.
This decision follows the legally binding report by the Independent Remuneration Panel for Wales (IRPW) who are responsible for setting councillor pay.

The increase would see councillors' basic salary rise from £18,666 to £19,771 for the upcoming year, translating to a 5.2% increase compared to the previous fiscal year.
The report acknowledged the economic constraints faced by Principal Councils, with the panel emphasizing the importance of maintaining a fair and reasonable remuneration structure to support elected members without hindering participation. It said:
“Whilst the total cost of remuneration for elected members is relatively low in terms of overall budgets, the Panel are aware of the continuing economic and fiscal constraints on Principal Councils."
“The IRPW is fully aware of the current constraints on public funding and the impact of its decision will have on the budgets of Principal Authorities.”
This increase extends to senior positions within the council, with the leader's salary witnessing a rise from £62,298 to £66,727. Cabinet members will see their salaries move from £37,799 to £40,036, while committee chairs and the leader of the largest opposition group will also experience an uptick from £27,999 to £29,657.
This decision marks the final instance of the IRPW setting councillors' pay. Moving forward, the Democracy and Boundary Commission Cymru will take over the responsibility for this process following the dissolution of the IRPW in April.
Town councillor allowances remain frozen at £208 a year which includes a sum for office consumables.
Although councils are obligated by law to implement the recommended pay increase, individual councillors retain the option to waive all or part of the additional payment.
