Town councillors have agreed to give Newtown Carnival Committee it's yearly tourism grant, despite the 2025 carnival being cancelled.

Members of the Council's Economy & Environment Committee of Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council met earlier this week for their monthly meeting.

As part of the business discussed was the annual distribution of tourism grants, aimed to helping organisations who run events in the town for promotion, marketing and other costs.

Newtown Carnival Trust, the charity behind the Newtown Carnival was set to get £2,000 which would cover event insurance, refreshments, programmes and more.

However, the charity, who announced the cancellation of the 2025 carnival earlier this year, wrote to the committee to still request the funds.

In the letter, the charity stated:

"The plan is to take this next year to help the new committee members learn what needs doing each month and possibly help out with other local community events too"

"Fund raising has also been a challenge for this small group of volunteers, so we're appointing young [redacted] to help us out."

"We still have year on year costs with no current income for the Carnival through public fund raising."

"Our costs include storage for all furniture (which is often loaned out to other community groups throughout the year for free), along with insurance, registrations, accountancy fees etc."

"This year may we please request £1000 instead of the £2000 support for Town Council, in order to cover our overheads whilst we're training up new volunteers in fund raising and event organising, but still allowing us to support the community with loan of our chairs and tables for local events."

"Over the next 12 months we will still be hosting Carnival events, such as Halloween and Chirstmas discos for children, as we've always done, so the funding supports us in delivering these events too."

Town councillors agreed with the request and decided to award £1,000 for this year.
