Six hundred trees are set to be planted in a special project at Trehafren Fields, one of Newtown's beloved open spaces.

The designated area, about the size of a tennis court, has been identified for this greening initiative amidst ongoing development work within Trehafren Fields that has faced challenges due to weather conditions.

Open Newtown, who looks after this green space, has responded to concerns over the damage caused by recent activities and assures that the area fenced off for the tree-planting project is part of a broader initiative funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

In a statement shared on social media, Open Newtown revealed:

"We’ve been chosen as a site for one of Earthwatch Coetiroedd Bach, or Tiny Forests, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund - Cymru and Welsh Government."

"This will see 600 trees planted in an area the size of a tennis court, providing extensive benefits in a short amount of time."

The project also includes plans for an outdoor classroom, to be utilized by Ysgol Calon y Dderwen and other interested schools for forest school activities. Students from these schools will participate in tree planting activities towards the end of the month.

Additionally, an open-to-the-public planting day is scheduled for the 23rd of November, inviting community members to take part in this greening effort. Open Newtown encourages interested individuals to join as "Tree Keepers," aiding in monitoring the progress of the Coetiroedd Bach project alongside Earthwatch.
