Montgomeryshire Member of the Senedd (MS) Russell George has voiced strong concerns over proposed changes to local bus services that could negatively impact rural communities across Powys.

His comments come in response to Powys County Council’s ongoing consultation on a revised bus timetable, which has sparked significant worry among residents.

During a recent visit to Welshpool on January 24, 2025, the First Minister of Wales, Eluned Morgan MS, highlighted her ambition to transform public bus services across Powys and provide greater transport provision for rural areas. While Mr. George welcomed this vision, he raised concerns that the council’s current proposals for changes to bus services may undermine the First Minister’s stated goals.

The council’s consultation seeks input from current and future bus users to shape a revised bus timetable for Powys residents. However, many residents have expressed concerns that the proposed changes could lead to reduced services in some areas, leaving certain communities underserved.

One of the most contentious issues is the potential discontinuation of the X75 service, which connects Llanidloes to Shrewsbury, stopping in Newtown, Abermule, Berriew, and Welshpool.

This route is vital for residents traveling to medical appointments in Shropshire and for those relying on public transport for work and other essential activities.

“Many people depend on services like the X75 to access medical appointments and travel to work,” said Mr. George. “The proposed changes risk leaving some communities underserved, with residents potentially facing wait times of up to two hours in Welshpool before continuing their journeys. This is simply unacceptable.”

During a Senedd session on January 28, Mr. George directly challenged the First Minister on whether Powys County Council’s proposals align with her vision for improved rural bus services. In response, the First Minister pointed to the Welsh Government’s forthcoming bus Bill, which she said would grant local authorities greater control over bus routes to better address local needs. She emphasized that guidance had already been issued to councils and corporate joint committees to support this transition.

Mr. George remains skeptical about the effectiveness of the proposed bus Bill in creating a more integrated and responsive transport network in Powys. “I strongly urge Powys County Council to review the Welsh Government’s guidance and ensure that local transport services meet the needs of those who depend on them the most,” he said. “I hope this consultation is a genuine effort to listen to the concerns of all communities, rather than a tick-box exercise.”

The consultation is open until February 13, 2025, and residents are encouraged to share their views via the council’s website here.
