Residents in Newtown will see a new operator take charge of their Household Waste Recycling Centre from April 2025, as Powys County Council confirms that Potters Group has lost its contract to manage the site.
Bryson Recycling, a well-established social enterprise with over 30 years of experience in waste management, has been awarded the new seven-year contract following a competitive tender process.

This change affects several key sites across the county, with Bryson Recycling taking over operations at the recycling centres in Newtown, Llandrindod Wells, Brecon, and Lower Cwmtwrch.
Potters Group will retain responsibility for running the Welshpool Household Recycling Centre.
For Newtown residents, the transition marks a significant shift with Potters Group has long been associated with waste management services in the area.
Cllr Jackie Charlton, Cabinet Member for a Greener Powys said “We are excited to be working with such an experienced social enterprise recycler such as Bryson Recycling."
“Together we are confident that we can continue to improve the recycling rate at the Household Recycling Centres, as well as boost reuse opportunities.
“We are also pleased to continue our relationship with Potter Group at the site in Welshpool and look forward to taking all five of the county’s Household Recycling Centres to the next level.”
Bryson Recycling, which already operates recycling centres for Conwy County Borough Council and Denbighshire County Council, has been active in Wales since 2014.
The company’s General Manager, Gareth Walsh, expressed enthusiasm about the new partnership: “We are extremely pleased to be working in partnership with Powys County Council and are looking forward to introducing our social enterprise approach across all four sites with the aim of increasing recycling and reuse whilst providing an excellent service to local residents.”
Residents can expect continuity in the core services offered at the recycling centres. Despite the change in operator, the opening days, hours, and types of materials accepted at the Newtown site will remain the same.
However, starting from April 2025, two key changes will be implemented across all sites: a booking system for visits and charges for DIY and building waste. These adjustments are part of Powys County Council’s medium-term financial strategy for 2024-2029, aimed at ensuring sustainable operations.
Details regarding the booking system and new charges will be provided by the council in due course.
